Jen and Nick explore the 'City Museum' in St. Louis

I always heard that kids grow up fast, but I never really appreciated how true that was until I became a parent myself. Nick's life is already almost as complicated as mine.

To start with --- well, I'll be completely honest. Nick's sleeping patterns leave something to be desired. I'm not too concerned right now; I understand that pretty much all children have sleep difficulties at some point in their lives. But Jen and I are nearing our wits' end. Nick will wake up for 1-2 hours in the middle of the night, and scream at us if we tell him to go back to sleep.

In an attempt to get Nick to fall into line, we've gone nuclear. No TV during the day unless he has at least tried to sleep the previous night. We'll see how it goes.

The funny thing is, Nick used to have the opposite problem, bordering on narcolepsy. He would fall asleep at peculiar times in unusual places. Here's a small sample:

After we had put him 'night-night' in his room, we came to bed later
to discover him under one of our bedroom tables

Sure, he's sleeping in his bed. But it's about 10:00 in the morning and
he's just had a bath. And why did he bring the bath mat with him?

Later that day, Nick falls asleep standing up.
Asleep on the family room floor.

Nick has been spending more quality time with Mommy, and she's been showing him some new things.

Jen takes Nick on the Merry-Go-Round.
Jen doesn't always exercise the best judgement.

Nick also got to spend some quality time with Pop over Labor Day.

Pop shows Nick how to slide downhill on cardboard.
Nick imitates Pop's fashion sense.

Yes indeed, our little boy is really growing up fast. In fact, very few people know this, but Nick has actually started doing freelance architect work. His design for the new World Trade Towers was among the finalists, but was ultimately rejected on the ground that his work was 'too immature'.

We're currently talking to our lawyers about the feasibility of an age discrimination suit.

Nick does a 'dry run' of his spiel before presenting it to the committee
